Just right

We had some friends in town to visit us this weekend. They are a family of five, and all of them stayed at our (smallish) house. Todd and Lisa (the parents) stayed on our sofa bed (I'm expecting a chiropractor bill any day now) and their kids all stayed on Dylan's floor. It was, um, cozy.

I loved showing off our home and our neighborhood, but it was a very busy weekend. The kids were constantly running in and out of the house. Max's matchbox cars were ALL brought upstairs. Some of them were even launched off the deck to the trampoline and then catapulted to the other areas of the yard. Dylan's art supplies were put to good use, and despite the use of old magazines as placemats, our cheap Ikea kitchen table (thank god for cheap Ikea kitchen tables) is covered in Sharpie.

The most alarming part of the weekend came about as our friends were packing up to go yesterday. Dylan's light fixture fell off her ceiling and hit Ty. He ran downstairs screaming that he was cut, leaving a trail of blood that wended its way from Dylan's door frame, down both sets of stairs and across my basement. 911 was called, the paramedics rushed in, and Ty was brought to the ER for seven stitches in his forehead. All ended OK, with no permanent damage inflicted to either Ty or the house. It was quite an ending to the weekend, though.

After our friends had left, the dogs returned from the kennel and we sat down just with ourselves, Michael and I took a collective deep breath. Good friends are wonderful, but often the best part of house guests is the silence that descends when it's back to just your nuclear family. Dylan might be whiny. Max is a whirling dervish sometimes, and lord knows Michael is high maintenance. There is also the matter of the dogs. But, we have our own little routine in place, and it is a good one. Our family is just right.
