I want to be "that mom"

(p.s. yes I missed posting yesterday. la la la can't hear you!)

When I was in junior high school, I babysat for a family that always had chopped up veggies in the fridge. It was usually just carrots and celery, and they were kept in an ice bath in a Tupperware. I spent many Saturday nights munching on veggies while watching Love Boat.

I've always wanted to be that mom. The kind of mom who has fresh fruits and veggies ready to go in the fridge for healthy and nutritious snacking. Sadly, I rarely have the time to do this, and even if I did, I find I'd rather curl up on the couch with Mia Michaels and Twitch and the rest of the So You Think You Can Dance Crew.

Somehow, though, I became that mom this weekend. When Max wanted a quick lunch yesterday, he was able to grab two hard boiled eggs from the fridge. There is also a container of clean cherries and blueberries. A quart of wild strawberries. A quart of Michigan raspberries. I have one plastic container filled with celery sticks and another with sliced purple kohlrabi (that link will provide you with a recipe for cooked kohlrabi, but I always just eat it raw and sprinkled with lots of salt - yum!) We also have a giant bag of pistachios, a big tub of homemade chicken salad, and some convenient tubes of yogurt.

I am so impressed with myself.

Can I come over? Our fridge is still bare.

Hard boiled eggs! So easy to make, yet I NEVER DO IT.

OK- I'm inspired! I can't believe I've forgotten what a good staple chicken salad can be. My hubby likes it spread on crackers with a little wedge of cheese and fruit on the side, and the kids love to make their own sandwiches. If I'm really feeling ambitious, I might make one "girlie" batch with halved red grapes and almonds, and one straight-up no-frills tub with just celery, mayo and pickle. I think I hear a chicken salad melt with a slice of tomato calling my name for dinner! Thanks!

Good for you! I would love to be that mom, too.

Hi! Congrats! Although it doesn't shock me that you became "that mom". Sounds to me like you've been "that mom" all along...

Just found your blog. I'm always on the look out for fun, food, parenting sites, since I write about food and family, too. Yours looks inspiring!

I'll be back for more...

xo

I want to be that mom too, and the one that is really open and invites people over easily for fun without worrying about nap time
