Spring Produce: Finally!!!
Dylie and I had a BLAST this morning. We left the house at 6:45, and drove down to the market listening to Radio Disney (what else?).
Once we arrived, we only had 45 minutes to do our shopping, so it was truly a whirlwind! I re-introduced myself to one of my cheesemaker idols (Judith Schad from Capriole). We met years and years ago at an American Cheese Society conference, and she was gracious enough to pretend to remember me! At that booth, we bought a Wabash Cannonball - so excited to eat it!
We then made our way to my favorite sprout vendor for some snow pea sprouts, and to the crepe stand for breakfast. I had a butter and sugar crepe. Dylie had maple. Once we ate, we had to really book!! We bought French breakfast radish, asparagus, a patio tomato plant, a basil plant, chives, gai lan (Chinese broccoli) and the very best thing of all: FIDDLEHEAD FERNS!!
Fiddlehead ferns don't taste very unique. They are kind of like asparagus. BUT, they are only available for about two weeks, so they are a real treat. I love stuff like that!

I genuinely hope that when I have kids, no matter what kind of rat race my life is running at that point, I take time to do things like this. Dyl is going to remember this exact kind of morning forever and how excited her Mom was to be there and how excited her Mom was be there with her.
Plus...the cheese!

What fun! I want to eat that cheese! How will you prepare the fiddlehead ferns and what will you serve them with? Sounds fun!

Lucky you! I needed fiddleheads Tuesday night for a cooking demo and couldn't find them anywhere so had to make something else. I love the tasty texture of fiddleheads--was going to do these in butter and lemon. I hope I find some soon!

The asparagus was so pretty at our FM last weekend I kind of wished I liked it. But I don't - blech!
How awesome is it that I now live within WALKING distance to our FM!? I got several heirloom tomato plants last Saturday, some local bison, goat cheese (and met the adorable amish kids who made it), homemade pasta and tons of produce. Here's to living in a decent city!!
