Caipirinhas (or, as I refer to them, Cultural Exchange Cocktails)
How cute is that wooden mortar and pestle? It was one of the gifts that Paty brought us (it was technically one of the gifts she brought for MICHAEL, but I christened it, so...)
Tonight, we had Caipirinhas with our dinner. Have you had one of these? They are delicious drinks. The recipe on the back of the mortar says that you can make them with vodka if you can't find a local source for Cachaca. But, do try to find the Cachaca. It's tasty.
Caipirinha
1 lime, cut into 8 wedges (cut in half, then cut each half into quarters)
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
2.5 ounces Cachaca (pronounced cah-sha-sah)
Mash the lime and sugar together in a mortar and pestle (or directly in an old fashioned glass). Pour the mixture, including the mashed up wedges, into a glass of crushed ice (if making directly in the glass, just add the ice to the glass). Add the Cachaca. Stir well. Enjoy.
P.S. Dylan said school was horrible. Her teacher was "mean," lunch was too short, and she wasn't allowed to write in cursive (how they wrote in Montessori). Tomorrow morning should be interesting.

Too funny...they drink Caipawhatevers in Germany too. Our last au pair made them for us when she was here. Looks like Paty knew the kind of gift that would be well used in your house!

It can take 3-4 weeks to get into the kindergarten groove. Hang in there!

Oh, goodness. Did you get any specifics? Change sure is hard when you're five. She'll get into the groove soon, I'm sure.

The drinks sounds delish and Dylan sounds disappointed. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better.

Oh, poor Dylan! My son was kept indoors b/c of the extremely hot weather for the first two weeks of school and it was awful making him go every morning. We're in week 4 and he's fine now. She'll come home with the name of a new friend and all will be well. Good luck!

Caipirinhas are awesome! There was a Brazilian restaurant across the street from my hotel in NYC and I had time to kill before I had to get to the airport...so I decided to have a cocktail. Needless to say, I stumbled my way into the cab to get to the airport. Good times! :)

Poor Dylan!!
How do you pronounce the name of the actual drink.

@Randi
It's pronounced Cay-Peer-een-ya
@Everyone else
Thanks for the good thoughts! I'll post more about her kindergarten woes tonight. She was OK this morning. I think the cursive issue was the most upsetting to her.

I feel bad for Dylan but Cursive is mostly a grade 2/3 thing here. Most kids going into K here aren't even set on making printed letters yet. I hope that the rest of the year works out well, it might be frustrating for her if she's ahead of the majority
